I happen to see this post (albeit 2 years later) on Tumblr and I have to say, yes, I love Joe, partly because he is a kuudere and therefore a character I would definitely like, and partly because I too identify very strongly with him (compared to most other tokusatsu characters in fact). But I kinda disagree with some of the points stated.
Joe is flawed, but he's beautifully crafted. The points stated are what I experience as well, and let's not forget we grow up in different environments, but I believe Joe is a stubborn, determined individual who is emotionally stunted because he was raised in an environment where he cannot be seen as weak. He is loyal to Marvelous because Marvelous saved him from death and gave him new purpose, a new life. You cannot blame him for wanting to protect his Captain at the expense of himself. (I am seeing some Spock/Kirk here OTL)
I don't see think he has low self-esteem. Some people cannot take praise and recognition because, they are humble, they think it's not necessary, they don't need it. In my case, I am not embarrassed - I outright deny. And I don't have low self-esteem because I am comfortable with myself.
Because of his background, he doesn't like asking for help. He'd rather solve his own problems, because he thinks it is his responsibility and no one should be dragged into it. Also, to him it is a matter of survival and I cannot blame him for not wanting to accept help from the crew. Masking pain is a problem only because most of us find it unhealthy to bottle up emotions. Sure, I do the same too, and I cannot deny that. Hiding one's pain via anger, humour and isolation is a common trait in most of the anime and manga I read, but I also interpret this as being unable to express himself openly, due to the environment he grew up with. Personally I don't see anything wrong with doing that, it doesn't make him a lesser person, and now that he has a crew and captain to care for, well, you just need a cool person on board this chaotic ship, right?
I love how complex Joe's seemingly bland personality is. People might find him boring, and I don't blame them. Yet beneath that default expression (expression? What expression?) lies a turmoil of emotions all waiting to be released at one shot. He is not an angry person. I find him admirable that he can feel so much and yet be able to control himself, releasing them only when he battles. At least he has a source to vent. Not too bad.
